Dispute Resolution Specialist

Prior to joining the Bar, Geoffrey Hawker practiced as a Consultant Engineer. Having started in structural steelwork, he worked for several consultants and contractors on power stations, bridges and tunnels, sea defence works and general civil engineering. Geoffrey worked on a number of notable projects including Oldbury Nuclear Power Station, Volta Bridge (Ghana) and the concrete containment vessel for Wylfa Nuclear Power Station.

Since being called to the Bar in 1970, Geoffrey has specialised in Dispute Resolution and has been appointed Arbitrator in more than 100 cases. His appointments as Arbitrator have been predominantly in engineering matters and also in general commercial cases. During the last 15 years, Geoffrey has sat as Conciliator, Adjudicator, Mediator or as a Dispute Board. He has more than 25 years experience on consumer arbitrations in the automotive industry.

Geoffrey accepts instructions in an advisory capacity by individual clients, corporations, institutions and government agencies on matters connected with engineering disputes and the conduct of Dispute Resolution procedures.

During the last 20 years, Geoffrey’s work from outside the UK has increased, in particular from Ireland, the Middle East and Far East, Africa, the Caribbean and the USA.

He is Legal Advisor Emeritus to the Standing Joint Committee which oversees I.C.E. Conditions of Contract. Similar work is undertaken for the Institution of Engineers of Ireland and the Federation Internationale des Ingenieurs-Conseils F.I.D.I.C.
