June 2010

Head of Chambers retires

After 10 years as Head of Clarendon Chambers, and 40 years practice at the Bar, Mrs Gay Martin has announed her intention to retire from practice at the end of July 2010. The members of chambers and clerks owe a huge debt of gratitude to Gay for her guidance, wisdom and support over the years, and we wish her a very happy and deserving retirement. Ben Beaumont takes over as Head of Chambers.

Clarendon Chambers criminal barrister elected Member of Parliament.

Members of chambers and clerks warmly congratulate Michael Ellis on his success in the general election, having won his seat at Northampton North. Michael follows in the footsteps of Sir Ivan Lawrence QC, formerly a conservative MP for many years, and fellow member of Clarendon Chambers.

Public Access - the restrictions are lifted!!

Significant changes to the Public Access rules have recently been announced by the Bar Standards Board (BSB) resulting in barristers having greater flexibilty in the work that they can undertaken when instructed directly by individuals and businesses, that is, without the need for a solicitor to be involved.

Family and civil junior joins chambers

Monica Aggarwal joins chambers from Beckett Chambers in Canterbury.  Monica adds further strength to the junior ranks, bringing expertise in family and child law, personal injury and employment.

ADR Group continues to grow

Arran Dowling-Hussey of the Dublin Bar joins chambers as Associate Member.  Arran, who is co-author of the leading Irish text on Arbitration "Arbitration Law" and Member of the Bar Council of Ireland's ADR committee, ads further strength to changers' ADR profile, at both domestic and interntional level, bringing extensive experience as both Arbitrator and Counsel.

Former civil litigation solicitor to join chambers

Nicola McIntosh, admitted as solicitor in 1995 and called to the Bar in 2007, will join chambers' Midlands practice in June. Nicola, a specialist in motor insurance fraud and personal injury brings a new and valuable dimension to the Civil Team with her litigation expertise and profile.

Public Acces Group continues to grow

Patrick McMorrow joins our Public Access group taking the number of barristers in chambers who can accept Public Access instructions to 13 including Queen's Counsel.

Clarendon Chambers Pubic Access service includes drafting documents and letters, advising on the law and appearing as advocates in a range of different legal fields, in particualr; ADR, mediation, construction, land law, neighbour and boundary disputes, commercial and residential property, landlord and tenant, housing, employment law and education.

Two more barristers join Civil Team

We are delighted to welcome Patrick McMorrow and Kirandeep Dhillon as members of chambers.
Patrick, who was called to the Bar in 1996 brings substantial expertise in the areas of property and construction, contract and tort, and personal injury.


Kirandeep adds further strength and depth to the junior ranks, with her expertise in personal injury and employment law.

Clarendon Chambers Public Access capability increases

Clarendon Chambers continues its planned expansion of Public Access barristers to 13, including Queen’s Counsel. This number is expected to increase to 17 by April 2010. Our Public Access service is becoming increasingly popular amongst members of the public and businesses as they start to move away from the previously traditional method of going to a solicitor.

Senior Chancery and Commercial barrister joins chambers.

We are delighted to welcome to chambers Farah Amin, MCIArb, formerly of 2 King’s Bench Walk. Farah, who was called to the Bar in 1991 focuses primarily on chancery, commercial and property related matters, and in family law with particular emphasis in high asset ancillary relief.

Senior Arbitration and Mediation specialist, Geoffrey Hawker, joins Chambers

Geoffrey Hawker, Eurlng; FREng;

FIStructE;
FCIArb, has joined Chambers as an Associate Member. He has been appointed as Arbitrator in more than 100 cases worldwide, predominantly in engineering and also in general commercial cases. Geoffrey has more than 25 years experience on consumer arbitrations in the automotive industry.

Immigration and Public Law specialist joins chambers

We are delighted to welcome Isaac Maka to chambers. Isaac, who was called to the Bar in 1998, brings invaluable experience to our Immigration, Public Law and Civil groups. He also sits as a Tribunal Judge at the Social Security Appeals Tribunal and on the Legal Services Commission's Funding Review Committee.

Junior barrister Dee Ramamoorthy joins chambers. Miss Ramamoorthy, who is also qualified at the New York Bar, specialises in employment law and civil litigation. In particular, she has acted in numerous discrimination cases, including a number of cases on behalf of Salford TUC. Her practice also focuses on contract law, landlord and tenant, education, media law and personal injury. Her arrival adds even more strength and expertise at the junior end of chambers.

Civil and Public Law junior, Duncan Richards, joins chambers. Stuart Yeung appointed Grade 4 Prosecutor on Midland Circuit

We congratulate Stuart Yeung on his recent appointment as Grade 4 Prosecutor on the Midland Circuit by the Crown Prosecution Service. Grade 4 is the highest Grade to be awarded by the CPS to Counsel, and is the measure of standard for the CPS in selecting barristers to prosecute the most serious and graves cases. These include murder and rape.

Junior Barrister, Hannah Mettam takes ASBO case to Judicial Review.

A 25-year-old man has failed to overturn an Anti-social Behaviour Order (ASBO) issued in February banning him from Northampton town centre. However, the Divisional Court did issue important guidance on how the issue of mental health problems should be dealt with by the courts before the granting of any type of order: Lord Justice Dyson, giving the judgment of the court, ruled that if a psychiatric report is available, which demonstrates that an individual is incapable of either understanding an order or complying with the terms of an order then that order should not be made. The case is the first guidance issued by a court in relation to the impact that mental health difficulties can have upon anti-social behavior orders. Family Barrister joins chambers

Family and Civil Barrister, Emmaleen Galley joins chambers from Bell Yard Chambers. Miss Galley, whose family practice focuses primarily on finance and divorce adds further strength to the junior end of the Team. On the civil side, Miss Galley will continue to practice in the areas of personal injury, contract, debt recovery and housing.
